Many young school leavers would opt to follow family members into the many coal pits around Fife.
The excellent website at https://www.fifepits.co.uk/ provides very valuable information about the Coalmining Industry in Fife.
The work of the hewer was certainly challenging as can be seen from this 1912 photograph. Hewers were typically physically strong and robust men of medium build.
Much of the social life of miners could revolve around their work colleagues with whom they developed strong bonds in their oft dangerous workplace.
